Graphic Novel/Comic Reviews

I read several graphic novels/comic books this month.  They tend to be a good way for me to break up my longer reads.  So, here are some thoughts about those.  🙂

Title: Adulthood is a Myth51Wo96djffL.jpg
Author: Sarah Andersen
Year Published: 2016
Format: Library Paperback, 112 pp

Summary: These casually drawn, perfectly on-point comics by the hugely popular young Brooklyn-based artist Sarah Andersen are for the rest of us. They document the wasting of entire beautiful weekends on the internet, the unbearable agony of holding hands on the street with a gorgeous guy, and dreaming all day of getting home and back into pajamas. In other words, the horrors and awkwardnesses of young modern life. Oh and they are totally not autobiographical. At all.

My Thoughts: Fun and relatable comics.  4 stars.

Title: Ms. Marvel Volume 1: No Normal
Author: G. Willow Wilson
Year Published: 2014
Format: Library Paperback, 120 pp

Summary: Kamala Khan is an ordinary girl from Jersey City — until she’s suddenly empowered with extraordinary gifts. But who truly is the new Ms. Marvel? Teenager? Muslim? Inhuman? Find out as she takes the Marvel Universe by storm! When Kamala discovers the dangers of her newfound powers, she unlocks a secret behind them, as well. Is Kamala ready to wield these immense new gifts? Or will the weight of the legacy before her be too much to bear? Kamala has no idea, either. But she’s comin’ for you, Jersey!

My thoughts: Cute, but I wasn’t interested enough to continue the series.  I was confused about how she got her powers; the scene was a little unclear.  3 stars.

Title: Black Panther: World of Wakanda Issue 1 35480222
Author: Roxane Gay
Year Published: 2016
Format: Kindle eBook, 36 pp

Summary: Writer Roxane Gay spins a Wakandan love story — its tenderness matched only by its brutality. You know them now as The Midnight Angels, but in this story they are just Ayo and Aneka, young women recruited to become Dora Milaje, an elite task force trained to protect the crown at all costs. What happens when your nation needs your hearts and minds, but you already gave them to each other? And in a special backup story, acclaimed poet Yona Harvey explores the true origins of The People’s mysterious leader Zenzi. Black Panther thinks he knows who Zenzi is and how she got her powers, but he only knows part of the story…

My thoughts: I thought this was about the Black Panther, so I was surprised when I started reading, but I enjoyed getting a glimpse into the history of the Dora Milaje and Zenzi.  3 stars.

34963526Title: Saga Volume 8
Author: Brian K. Vaughan
Year Published: 2017
Format: Library Paperback, 146 pp

Summary: After the traumatic events of the War for Phang, Hazel, her parents, and their surviving companions embark on a life-changing adventure at the westernmost edge of the universe.

My thoughts: This series has been hit-and-miss for me.  The artwork is interesting, and some of the issues have been more entertaining than others.  But I have been losing interest for awhile, and I doubt I will continue on.  The story is lackluster and feels like it’s lost its focus.  2.5 stars.
